Preparation
  1. Toast the bread: place slices in a toaster or under a broiler until the edges are golden and crisp.
  2. Prepare the avocado: cut avocados in half, remove the pit, and scoop the flesh into a bowl. Add the lemon or lime juice, a pinch of salt, and a dash of black pepper. Mash with a fork until creamy but still slightly chunky.
  3. Dress the bread: drizzle each toasted slice lightly with olive oil while hot or spread butter to melt.
  4. Assemble: spread a generous layer of mashed avocado on each slice.
  5. Finish with toppings: scatter optional toppings as desired and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  6. Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

Leftover mashed avocado can be stored with plastic wrap pressed directly onto the surface for up to 24 hours. Assembled Avocado Toast should not be stored, but components can be kept separately.
