Cake Ingredients
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix plus required eggs, oil, and water
Caramel Layer Ingredients
  • 1 bag caramels, unwrapped
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk use full-fat for richness
  • 1 stick butter
Toppings
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans lightly toasted for extra flavor
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips for additional chocolate intensity

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven according to the cake mix instructions. Grease and flour your cake pan.
  2. Prepare the chocolate cake batter using the box mix according to the package instructions.
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter and add the caramels and evaporated milk, stirring until smooth.
Assembly
  1. Pour half of the cake batter into the prepared pan.
  2. Drizzle the caramel mixture over the batter and sprinkle with chopped pecans and chocolate chips.
  3. Pour the remaining cake batter over the top, covering the caramel layer.
Baking
  1. Bake as directed on the cake mix box, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  2. Allow to cool before serving.

Notes

Serve slices warm or at room temperature. A scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream pairs beautifully. Store the cooled cake covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days. Individual slices can be frozen for up to 2 months.
