  • 1 cup shredded cheese Cheddar is classic; mix with mozzarella for extra creaminess.
  • 1/2 cup onion Finely chopped; can swap with shallots for a milder taste.
  • 1/4 cup milk Almond milk works as a dairy-free alternative.
  • 1 piece egg Binds the mixture together.
  • 1 teaspoon salt and pepper Essential for seasoning; adjust to your preference.
  • 1 cup tomato sauce For a rich layer on top; BBQ sauce can be an exciting twist.
Optional Ingredients
  • Herbs Like thyme or parsley for added freshness.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch casserole dish to prevent sticking.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion, egg, milk, and half of the cheese. Season with salt and pepper, mixing until just combined.
  3. Transfer the meat mixture into the prepared casserole dish, shaping it into a loaf.
Baking
  1. Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the top.
  2. Bake in your preheated oven for 30 minutes, then sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.
  3. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  4. Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before slicing, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.

Notes

You can incorporate finely chopped vegetables like zucchini or bell peppers for a healthier spin. Consider using ground lamb or chicken for a unique flavor profile. Try adding a dash of Worcestershire sauce or Sriracha to the meat mixture for extra kick!
