Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 1 cup water Feel free to use flavored water for an extra twist!
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter Margarine can work in a pinch, but butter adds that rich flavor.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour For a gluten-free option, try using almond or coconut flour, though results may vary.
  • 2 large eggs Egg substitutes, like flax or applesauce, can work but may alter the texture slightly.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract This adds a lovely depth of flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt A pinch of salt enhances the sweetness!
Coating Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar Brown sugar is a delightful alternative if you prefer a richer flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon Feel free to adjust based on your taste preference.
  • as needed Cooking spray or oil For that gorgeous crispiness!

Method

Preparation
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the water and butter. Heat over medium until the butter is melted, and the mixture is bubbling.
  2. Remove from heat and quickly stir in the flour and salt until well combined. The dough should form a ball and pull away from the sides of the pan.
  3. Let the mixture cool for a few minutes. Once cool enough to handle, add the eggs one at a time, stirring vigorously after each addition until the mixture is smooth.
  4. Add vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  5. Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a star tip. Line your air fryer basket with parchment paper.
  6. Pipe small bite-sized churros onto the parchment, leaving space between each.
  7. Spray or brush the churro bites lightly with cooking spray or oil to ensure a crisp finish.
Cooking
  1. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Cook the churro bites in batches for around 8-10 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
  2. While the churros are still warm, toss them in a mixture of granulated sugar and cinnamon for that iconic churro finish.

Notes

For chocolate-covered churros, dip in melted chocolate after cooling. For a seasonal treat, add pumpkin spice to the sugar. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days and reheated in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for about 3 minutes.
