Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1.5 pounds lean ground beef (85/15) Choose for flavor and juiciness.
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped Swap with shallots for a sweeter note.
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced Toasted garlic adds depth.
  • 1 cup canned diced tomatoes Use fresh in season or fire-roasted for smokiness.
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika Substitute plain paprika for a milder profile.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin Optional, for warmth.
  • Salt and freshly cracked black pepper To taste.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce For umami; soy sauce can substitute.
Optional Additions
  • 1 cup cooked rice or pasta Optional, to stretch into a hearty meal.
  • 1 cup shredded cheese Optional, choose cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a mix.
  • Fresh herbs (parsley or cilantro) For brightness.

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add a drizzle of oil and the chopped onion. Cook until translucent and the edges begin to caramelize — about 3 to 4 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic and bell pepper. Stir for 30 to 60 seconds until the garlic becomes fragrant.
  3. Crumble in the ground beef and let it sear for a minute without stirring. Break the meat apart and continue to cook until no pink remains.
  4. Sprinkle in smoked paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper. Stir to coat the beef with the spices.
  5. Pour in the diced tomatoes and Worcestershire sauce. Stir and let simmer gently for 5 to 8 minutes.
  6. If using, fold in cooked rice or pasta. Adjust seasoning. For an indulgent finish, sprinkle shredded cheese over and cover to melt.
  7. Finish with a scatter of chopped parsley or cilantro.

Notes

For a healthier option, substitute half the beef with ground turkey or lentils. For a festive twist, add cinnamon and allspice.
