Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 1 package active dry yeast about 2 1/4 teaspoons
  • 1/4 cup warm water (105 to 110°F)
  • 1 cup warm milk (whole or 2 percent), warmed but not hot
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter melted and slightly cooled (or use coconut oil for dairy-free option)
  • 2 large eggs room temperature (use 3 if eggs are small)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (substitute 1 cup whole wheat for a heartier option)
Filling
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter softened
Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar sifted
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk or citrus juice (orange or lemon) for brightness
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Topping
  • Colored sanding sugar in purple, green, and gold (or use sprinkles)
  • Optional: tiny plastic baby or bean to tuck inside for tradition (wrap in parchment)

Method

Preparation
  1. Stir the active dry yeast into warm water with a pinch of sugar. Let sit 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk warm milk, melted butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and salt. Add the foamy yeast.
  3. Gradually mix in 2 cups of flour, then stir until a soft dough forms.
  4. Add more flour 1/4 cup at a time until dough pulls away from the sides but remains slightly tacky.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead 6 to 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Filling Preparation
  1. While dough rises, combine brown sugar, cinnamon, and softened butter in a bowl until crumbly and spreadable.
Shaping and Baking
  1. Punch down dough and roll it into a rectangle about 12 by 18 inches.
  2. Spread the cinnamon-sugar mix evenly, leaving a 1/2-inch border.
  3. Roll the dough tightly into a log from the long side and pinch the seam closed.
  4. Transfer the log to a parchment-lined baking sheet and shape into a ring, pinching the ends together.
  5. Tuck the optional wrapped trinket somewhere in the dough seam for the classic surprise.
  6. Cover loosely and let rise 20 to 30 minutes until puffy.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the top with a little melted butter for a golden sheen.
  8. Bake 20 to 25 minutes until the top is deep golden and the cake sounds hollow when tapped.
Glazing and Decorating
  1. Let cool 10 minutes, then whisk glaze to a pourable consistency and drizzle over the ring.
  2. Immediately sprinkle purple, green, and gold sugar for the festive finish.

Notes

For a healthier option, reduce sugar in the dough slightly and use a lighter glaze. For an extra indulgent dessert, add a cream cheese swirl to the filling.
