Ingredients

For the filling
  • 6 cups sliced apples (about 6 medium apples; Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for more depth of flavor.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Feel free to use brown sugar for a richer taste.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Add a pinch of nutmeg for additional warmth.
For the crisp topping
  • 1 cup oats Old-fashioned oats give a great texture, but quick oats can be used in a pinch.
  • 1 cup flour Try swapping half of it with almond flour for a nutty twist.
  • ½ cup melted butter Can be substituted with coconut oil for a dairy-free option.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Consider using almond extract too for an extra layer of flavor.
  • ½ cup sugar Remaining sugar for the topping.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples. Mix them in a bowl with ½ cup of sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, then set aside.
Crisp Topping
  1. In another bowl, combine oats, flour, and the remaining sugar. Mix well.
  2. Stir in the melted butter and vanilla until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Assembly and Baking
  1. Spread the sweetened apples evenly in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Sprinkle the oat mixture over the apples, ensuring an even coverage.
  3. Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for about 40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
  4. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  5. Serve warm as is, or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a truly indulgent dessert.

Notes

To maintain the crispiness of the topping, store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, keep in the freezer for up to two months. To reheat, place it in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15 minutes.
