Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
- Mix in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually stir in the flour and salt until combined.
- Fold in the chopped maraschino cherries and walnuts (if using).
- Roll the dough into small balls and place them on ungreased baking sheets.
- Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Allow to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
Serve at room temperature on holiday platters; pairs well with teas or chocolate cookies. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days or freeze for longer storage.
