Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
- In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until well combined.
- Stir in the milk and melted butter until a soft dough forms.
- Spoon the jam or pie filling into the bottom of the prepared dish.
- Drop tablespoon-sized dumplings of dough over the jam, spacing them so that their edges will touch.
- Sprinkle brown sugar and optional spices evenly over the dumplings, and dot with extra butter.
Baking
- Bake for 25–30 minutes until the dumplings are puffed and golden and the jam is bubbling.
- Let the dish rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.
